Am I too late for the Street Fighter jam?

Here's some evil ryu, I was hoping you guys might weigh in on the colors as they're not really working for me...

EDIT: Tried to incorporate ya'lls sugestions.

  1. Mmm... darker colors, particularly the background. Would go more towards a grey than a blue/purple for the robes. Stick with red for the headband and belt just to get the character across. And the gloves I'd do more of a grey/red. But that's just my opinion. I <3 DARK COLORS W/ TEH BLACK :B

  2. You need to go deeper with colour values and contrast.....Inception!

  3. Defiantly deeper. Defiantly more contrast.

  4. Looking at the Sinistar's and your picture side by side, I have to agree. The contrast helps but I also agree with Hex, the purple should lose some saturation and go darker. But, that also depends on where you're going with the picture. Looks like he's standing in the middle of some fire, in which case he should be lit up from all sides with only very deep shadows in the few spots where the light wouldn't touch.

Remember where your light sources are and try to picture what parts the light wouldn't be able to reach. It's probably not the easiest thing to picture but you get to understand it after a while. What I'm still trying to add is light bouncing off of other surfaces and highlighting other parts of the body in a soft glow.

  6. I think the lighting on the hair is top notch. The Gi is a bit scatter shot and I still think there needs to be darker shadows. Try not to intersect parts that are in the shadow with parts that are highlighted or vice-vercia as the case may be. Remember that there is back lighting but no direct overhead lighting, so the highlights on the chest near his left arm shouldn't really be there. The lower part of his left arm should get more highlighting however.

I tell ya, this is probably one of the most difficult types of drawings to color. Anything with multiple light sources tend to get very difficult and more so with fire since it adds reds and yellows into the mix with lots of shadows. I try to stick with one light source but I really should branch out and try something more daring.
